Heart of Philanthropy Retreat Series
Values-based Giving in Uncertain Economic Times
“As donors we may have lowered capacity during a recession, but we can choose to be more generous….What does it mean to be generous?”
~Ken Nickerson, Former Hedge Fund Manager
You are invited to join a cohort of local donors who will gather five times in early 2009 for deep reflection and sharing on core questions about giving and generosity, with special consideration of the challenges posed by the current economic climate.
Last fall at the SVPI national conference in Seattle, Paul Brainerd challenged attendees to cultivate three qualities as philanthropists: “1) Slow down, 2) Take care of yourself every day, and 3) Be vulnerable and see what happens.” The Heart of Philanthropy series is a unique opportunity to engage with these practices.
Who: The series is intended for philanthropists who:
- seek a safe and challenging space to explore the relationship between their giving and their core values;
- strive not only to be more effective and efficient in their philanthropy, but also to feel more satisfied as philanthropists; and,
- desire more authentic and meaningful peer relationships.
What: A series of five mini-retreats that will deepen personal reflection around giving and foster deep connections with other local donors. Themes are determined by the interests of the group. (The last group explored their motivations for giving, core philanthropic values and missions, and how they decide how much to give.)
